What we do in Colorado

Water and wastewater engineering in Aurora

MES designs water, sewer and site civil work for projects in Aurora, Colorado. We work for developers, property owners, utilities and other engineering firms.

Typical work includes water and sewer main extensions, lift stations, grading and drainage, and the plan sets a city reviewer needs. Our Colorado office is in Golden, west of Denver.

How review works in Aurora

Aurora Water is the city utility for drinking water, sanitary sewer and storm drainage. Its standard specifications set the rules for new water, sewer and storm lines.

Civil construction documents go to Engineering Plans Review, part of the city Development Services Department. A complete first submittal saves time.

Drainage studies are checked against the city criteria and Mile High Flood District criteria. Parts of Aurora drain to Cherry Creek Reservoir, where a state control regulation limits phosphorus.

Aurora spans Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties. A new lift station or treatment plant above 2,000 gallons per day also needs CDPHE site location and design approval.

Work in and near Aurora

In Aurora, MES did the civil site plan work for a drive-up water kiosk. It is one site in a kiosk program that runs across seven states. In Commerce City, we designed a waterline replacement for a mobile home park and took it through city review to construction. To the north in Brighton, we designed a wastewater lift station. Southeast of Aurora in Elizabeth, we led the design of a 10-inch waterline extension.

Common questions

Who approves water and sewer plans in Aurora?

Engineering Plans Review in the city Development Services Department reviews civil plans. Water, sewer and storm work must meet Aurora Water standards. Larger wastewater facilities also need CDPHE approval.

Does my Aurora site need a stormwater permit?

If construction disturbs one acre or more, or the site is part of a larger plan that will, you need coverage under the CDPHE construction stormwater general permit. The city reviews the drainage design as well.
