Where we work
Water and wastewater engineering in Colorado: treatment plants, lift stations, water and sewer lines, site civil and CDPHE permitting. Office in Golden.
Modern Engineering Solutions (MES) designs water and wastewater systems across Colorado. We work for towns, water and sanitation districts, developers and other engineering firms.
Our Colorado office is in Golden. MES is licensed in Colorado and eight other states, and has completed 525+ projects.
The work runs from treatment plants and lift stations to water and sewer lines and site civil design for new development. We also study water loss and inflow and infiltration (I&I) for small utilities, and we support owners during construction.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) is the main state reviewer. Its Water Quality Control Division issues discharge permits and approves the design of water and wastewater facilities.
Most new or expanded wastewater plants and lift stations with a design capacity above 2,000 gallons per day need CDPHE site location and design approval under Regulation 22. Local agencies get a chance to comment on the site application first. A Colorado-licensed professional engineer stamps the design.
New drinking water sources, treatment and storage are reviewed against the state Design Criteria for Potable Water Systems. Construction that disturbs one acre or more needs coverage under the CDPHE construction stormwater general permit.
Cities, counties and special districts review the civil plans, line extensions and taps in their own areas. Many new neighborhoods get water and sewer from a metropolitan district or a water and sanitation district. We explain the two state steps in CDPHE site application vs discharge permit.
MES has worked from the Front Range to the mountain towns. In Yampa, we designed a wastewater plant and collection system. In Conifer, we designed water plant upgrades and 40,000 feet of line rehabilitation for a water and sanitation district.
Usually, yes. A plant above 2,000 gallons per day needs CDPHE site location and design approval. If it discharges to state waters, it also needs a discharge permit. Read more on package plant permitting in Colorado.
